and lots of shouting most people ran from the room and me, being
a fearless macho male! lifted my legs onto the sofa and grabbed
a cushion as a defensive shield. However, there was an elderly
woman amongst us, she was probably in her seventies, and she just
stayed put. When the dog lunged at her she held her hand out and
quietly said something (I did not hear exactly what she said).
The dog looked away from her, gave a couple of barks and slunk
out of the room.
How
did she do that? was it just a coincidence, was it witchcraft?
or did she know something the rest of us did not know?

I asked her about the incident but her response was disappointing.
She did not really have much to tell me. She was not a dog trainer
as such, although she had always kept dogs. Basically she said
"you need to create a bubble of calm around both you and
the dog and just tell it what you want it to do". Well it
seemed a bit silly at the time but it set me thinking and I started
to research dog training methods that followed the path that the
elderly lady had suggested. I contacted many leading experts who
